Archive material and source history
Onildo Barbosa formed his group Cabras da Peste in the 1990s, coming from Juazeiro do Norte in Brazil's northeast. He played accordion, and the band included Targino Gondim on vocals, Chico Sena on triangle, and Miltinho on zabumba. Their music drew from the sounds of the sertão, the arid backlands region.
Their first album was 2001's "Vivendo No Campo," which gave its name to their song "Vivendo No Campo (xote Pé de Serra)." They followed it with records like "A Saga do Vaqueiro" in 2004 and "O Rei do Baião" in 2007, working in the xote pé de serra style. Later albums included "O Canto do Sertão" and "O Vaqueiro Insistente."
The group's lyrics often dealt with rural life, delivered with a straightforward, rustic feel. Their sound captured something of the Brazilian outback without much polish, which connected with certain listeners who valued that directness.
