Onmyoza formed in 1999 around vocalist Matsubara Kazuto and guitarist Takeda Tsunehito. They built an audience through underground shows, working outside the usual industry channels. Their sound draws from Japanese folklore and traditional instruments like the shamisen and koto, set against rock arrangements.
Their 2003 album 'Kumikyoku "Yoshitsune" - Muma Enjo' gave them wider recognition. Songs like 'Agito' and 'Gashadokuro' show their approach: mythic themes delivered with theatrical rock energy. The current lineup includes Nakamura Yutaka on bass, Naoto on drums, and Takeshi Morimoto on keyboards.
They've worked with folk singer Toki Asako and Noh performer Yamamoto Tetsuya, keeping their music rooted in traditional forms while maintaining a live rock presence. Their catalog stays focused on this blend, avoiding mainstream trends in favor of their own particular style.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
