Archive material and source history
Oobie came out of Oakland in the early 1990s with a song called "Can't Stop Pimpin'" that got some attention. The track had a blunt, catchy quality that felt specific to its moment. Their debut album shared that title and arrived in 1992.
They followed it with a couple more records, 1994's "This Livin' Is Crazy" and 1996's "Too Serious." The band's lineup included Ravon Cortez on vocals, Marval Alexander on keyboards, Tony Jones on drums, and Clarence Moore on bass. Other songs like "Nothins Free" and "One Night Stand" featured Lil Jon, and "I Wonder" had Pitbull on it.
Some of their material dealt with street life in plain terms, which drew criticism at the time. Ravon Cortez also had some drug-related legal trouble. Their sound was part of a particular West Coast rap landscape, straightforward and unadorned.
