Oompie Koerier was a Dutch folk-rock band that formed in 1966 with Piet Feller on vocals and guitar, Peter Tetteroo also on vocals and guitar, Niki Schipper on bass, and Hans Janmaat on drums. They released their debut album 'De Piratenballade' in 1968, which included the title track that would become their most recognizable song.
That song, 'De Piratenballade,' told the story of a pirate named Pietje de Pirate and became something of a cultural phenomenon in the Netherlands. Its catchy melody and vivid storytelling connected with listeners, though some criticized it for what they saw as glorifying piracy. The band had another notable track called 'Meneer De Rechter' that also found an audience.
After releasing several albums including 'Madam' in 1970 and 'De Verloren Schepen' in 1972, Feller left the band in 1975 to pursue solo work, and Oompie Koerier disbanded shortly after. They would reunite in various lineups during the 1980s, releasing 'De Laatste Stuiver' in 1981 and 'Koerier' in 1989, and continued performing at festivals.
