Archive material and source history
Opa! F.C. started in Rio de Janeiro in the early 2000s, with Valdir "Xique" Xavier, Marcos Azevedo, and Marcelo "Boca" Silva playing together. They had some early trouble getting noticed, but kept at it with street shows around the city.
In 2003, their song "Essa Canção É Pra Voce!" caught on and became a hit. That track, along with others like "Fica Aqui" and "Talvez," helped them put out albums over the next few years, including Opa! F.C. in 2004 and Samba Futebol Clube in 2009.
There was some noise in 2007 about whether "Essa Canção É Pra Voce!" borrowed too much from another tune, but it didn't stick. The three of them kept playing as Opa! F.C. for a while after that.
