Archive material and source history
Opaê formed in Fortaleza in 1998 with Ricardo Chaves on vocals, Alexandre Vaqueiro on guitar, Lauro Silva on bass, and Cristiano Martins on drums. They built a local following with energetic shows before releasing their debut album 'Vai Rolar' in 2003.
That album included 'Quebre Se Quizer,' which became a Brazilian party staple. Its catchy beat and humorous lyrics made it ubiquitous at celebrations, pushing the band to national television and radio appearances.
They followed with several more albums like 'Opaê: Ao Vivo' in 2004 and 'Vem Dançar' in 2005. In 2006, Chaves left after a public incident and was replaced by Felipe Pezzoni. The band continued performing, though they faced plagiarism accusations in 2012.
