Archive material and source history
Opal formed in San Francisco in 1984 around guitarist Kendra Smith and bassist David Roback. They were joined by drummer Keith Mitchell, and the group put out two albums before breaking up in 1989. Their 1987 debut was 'Happy Nightmare Baby,' followed by 'Early Recordings' the next year.
Their track 'Aphgan Blues' from that second album became a cult favorite, a slow, atmospheric piece that defined their sound. They also recorded 'I Said It.' The music had a drifting, introspective quality that drew from folk and psychedelic rock.
After Opal ended, David Roback went on to form Mazzy Star with Hope Sandoval. Kendra Smith worked on solo material and collaborations. The band's brief run left a small but distinct catalog that resonated with a particular audience in the late 1980s.
