Background notes

Archive material and source history

Orlando was a freestyle music collective that came together in the 1980s. Their sound leaned into dance grooves and layered harmonies, with Amy Correa handling lead vocals. The group included Susan Quiñones on backing vocals, Rich Rosado on keyboards, José 'J.J.' Bonet on guitar, Carlos 'Charlie' Soto on bass, and Carlos 'Carl' Vega on drums.

In 1987, they released 'Heaven Must Have Sent You,' which became their signature track. The song's blend of freestyle rhythms and pop melody connected with listeners, especially in dance club settings. They followed it up with 'The Promise '95' a few years later.

Like many groups from that era, Orlando dealt with the usual industry pressures and internal tensions that can come with touring and recording. They put out a few albums before eventually winding down, but their music, particularly 'Heaven Must Have Sent You,' still gets played in freestyle and 80s pop circles.
