Editor's note

Orlando Silva, the Nightingale of Brazilian Music

A samba singer from Rio whose clear voice defined an era, then faded amid personal struggles.

For his peak, listen to 'Naná' or 'Jardineira'. If you want the later, more weathered sound, try 'A História do Pierrô'.

Silva's voice had that nickname for a reason, it gave songs like 'Naná' and 'Aos Pés Da Cruz' a fluid, effortless quality that felt like the sound of 1930s Rio. His 1939 recording of 'Jardineira' became a national hit, cementing his place in samba's early days. Even later tracks like 'A História do Pierrô' showed he could handle narrative samba as well as romantic ballads.

He started singing professionally at 18 with Batutas da Mangueira in 1933, and by the late 1930s he was recording hits like 'Jardineira'. The 1940s brought songs such as 'Quando a Mulher Não Quer', but his career was interrupted by struggles with addiction and a 1947 arrest. He eventually got sober and returned to singing, though never quite recaptured that early momentum.

Orlando Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1915. He started singing professionally at 18 with Batutas da Mangueira in 1933, and his voice quickly became a fixture in the samba scene of that era. People called him the Nightingale of Brazilian Music, which wasn't just a nickname, it described the clear, fluid quality he brought to songs like 'Naná' and 'Aos Pés Da Cruz'.

In 1939, he recorded 'Jardineira,' a samba by Walfrido Silva and Benedito Lacerda. That song became a national hit and defined his sound for many listeners. He kept recording through the 1940s, putting out tracks such as 'Quando a Mulher Não Quer' and 'A História do Pierrô,' which showed his range from romantic ballads to more narrative samba.

Silva's personal life was difficult. He struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, which led to hospital stays and periods where he wasn't recording or performing. In 1947, he was arrested for narcotics possession. With help from friends in the music world, he eventually managed to get sober and return to singing, though his career never quite regained its earlier momentum.
