Orquestra Imperial formed in 1996 in Rio de Janeiro with Wilson das Neves, Rômulo Gomes, Renato Piau, and Claudio Lins. They started playing small clubs, working out a sound that mixed samba, funk, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Their lyrics often touched on social justice and everyday struggles, which didn't always sit well with everyone.
In 2004 they released the album 'Tem que Lutar,' and the title track became something of an anthem. You can hear that same directness in songs like 'Não foi em vão' and 'Sem Compromisso.' They kept at it, playing their own thing without much concern for what was expected.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
