Archive material and source history

Orquidália started in Rio de Janeiro in 1967, put together by Marcos Valle, Paulo Sérgio Valle, and Nara Leão. They worked with bossa nova and samba, but didn't stick to a pure version of either. Their self-titled album came out in 1970, followed by 'Bossa Sentimental' the next year.

That song, 'Bossa Sentimental,' is probably what most people know them for. It's a quiet, moody piece that feels like a late-night Rio tune. They also recorded 'Convocação,' 'Maré,' and 'Mátria Amada' around the same period.

They played live at places like Canecão, and their lineup sometimes included Dom Salvador on percussion and Paulinho da Viola on guitar. By the mid-1970s they'd put out a few more records, including 'Sonhos' and 'Orquidália 5.'
