Ory Souza formed his band Ory Souza Gaúcho Serrano in 1996 in Rio Grande do Sul, drawing from the region's gaucho traditions. The group included guitarist Nego Costa, accordionist Neneco, and percussionist Batata. Their debut album 'O Tempo e a Vida' came out the following year in 1997.
They followed with albums like 'Terra Gaúcha' in 2000, 'Um Olhar pra Trás' in 2005, and 'Brasileiríssimo' in 2014. Some of their songs include 'Baile da Serra' and 'Estouro de Tropa'.
Their approach to gaucho music drew criticism from some traditionalists who felt it strayed from purist roots. Souza maintained that the tradition could evolve while keeping its essence.
