Os Cafonas formed in Lisbon in 1984, a Portuguese punk band with a deliberately confrontational style. Their lineup included Zé Pedro on vocals, Miguel Pedro on guitar, Fernando Novais on bass, Pedro Pestana on drums, and Luís Bettencourt on saxophone. They released albums like 'Punks à Solta' in 1985 and 'Maldoror' in 1986, working with a raw energy that drew from punk acts like the Sex Pistols and The Damned.
Their 1985 song 'O Sexo dos Mortos-Vivos' caused particular trouble with authorities and conservative groups, leading to censorship and obscenity charges. Another track, 'Psycho Funeral (alegria de coveiro)', reflected their taste for dark, morbid themes. The band explored subjects like death, sex, and social injustice with explicit lyrics and anarchic performances.
Os Cafonas put out a live album in 1987 and 'À Flor da Pele' in 1989 before disbanding in the early 1990s. Their music has been reissued since, and they maintain a cult following in Portuguese punk circles.
