Background notes

Archive material and source history

Os Camaleões formed in Recife in the 1960s with Paulinho on vocals, Manoelzinho on keyboards, and guitarists Gilvan and Edil. They put out their first album, 'Psicodelia ou Pandemonium,' in 1969. The band is best known for the 1971 single 'Salete Pirulito,' which became a national hit in Brazil.

They released albums like 'A Máquina Voadora' in 1972 and 'A Nova Estação' the following year. The lineup expanded around that time with bassist Pantico and drummer Zé Renato.

By the 1980s, Os Camaleões had disbanded. Their music, particularly 'Salete Pirulito,' has remained a recognizable piece of Brazilian pop from that era.
