Os Carachos

Os Carachos formed in 1957 in Bagé, a city in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. They took their name from a playful reference to the independent spirit of the gauchos, the South American cowboys whose traditional folk songs influenced their music. The band worked to create a style that reflected their region's cultural heritage, which would later be called nativista music.

In 1961, they released "Adeus Querência," a single whose lyrics about leaving home and longing for familiar places connected with listeners. The song became a classic in their catalog. They went on to record albums like "Tropeiro Errante" in 1962, "Guitarra e Pampas" in 1964, and "Terra Nossa" in 1967.

Their music blended traditional folk elements with contemporary arrangements. While some early critics found their approach too modern, their performances at local festivals and on radio broadcasts built a following. They became known as an influential group in Brazilian nativista music.
