Os Negões formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1999, started by brothers Marcelo and Alex Pires along with Max de Castro and Rodrigo Mó. They played local bars and clubs with a sound that mixed samba and pop. Their first album came out in 2003 on Sony Music, called 'Só Pra Contrariar'.
That album had 'Volte Pra Mim,' which became their breakout song. Its lyrics about love and longing connected with listeners across Brazil. The band faced some criticism for what some saw as sexual themes in their music and for their energetic stage style.
They went on to release several more albums and songs like 'Ela Tá Diferente' and 'Depois do Prazer.' The original lineup featured Marcelo Pires on lead vocals, Alex Pires on backing vocals and percussion, and Max de Castro on backing vocals and guitar.
