Os Procópios came from Barra do Garças in Mato Grosso, a small town in the Brazilian sertão. They started out playing at local rodeos and gatherings, with José Pereira da Silva on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Antônio Pereira da Silva on backing vocals and lead guitar, Pedro de Alcântara on bass, and Valdemar Gonçalves on drums. For a while, they mostly played around their own region.
In 1987, they released the album "Começou o Rodeio." The title track caught on quickly, becoming a kind of anthem for the sertanejo lifestyle. That song is the one most people know them by. After that, they put out other albums like "A História dos Procópios" in 1991 and "Quem É Que Não Gosta de Sertanejo?" in 1995, and they started playing to bigger crowds across Brazil.
Some of their lyrics, which often dealt with love, betrayal, and drinking, drew criticism from people who felt they promoted excess. But the band kept going, and their music stayed popular with a lot of listeners in the sertanejo scene.
