Os Radiadores formed in Porto in 1976, with Sérgio Godinho, Zé Pedro, Alex Cortez, and Zé Nabo as founding members. Their debut album 'Fora da Lei' came out in 1979, and its title track became associated with political and social change in post-revolutionary Portugal.
Their song 'Carona' became widely known, though it drew some criticism for its direct portrayal of a hitchhiker's experience. The band kept writing about everyday life and relationships without softening their approach.
Zé Pedro left in 1982 but returned in 1994, and Alex Cortez was replaced by Carlos Maria Trindade during the 1980s. Godinho and Pedro remained the main songwriters through these changes. They released albums like 'Toada' in 1980, 'A Sombra' in 1985, and 'O Último Tango' in 1990 before disbanding in 2001.
