Os Sacerdotes formed in Salvador, Brazil during the 1970s around vocalist and songwriter Letieres Leite. Their name means 'The Priests,' and their early work mixed Brazilian rhythms like samba and afoxé with rock and jazz elements. Their lyrics often touched on social justice and spirituality.
In 1981, they released the album 'Volta!' with its title track becoming a national phenomenon in Brazil. The song served as an anthem of hope during a period of political turmoil in the country. The album's success brought them wider recognition and led to tours through South America and Europe.
Their discography includes several albums through the 1980s and early 1990s, such as 'Caminhos da Fé' (1983), 'Oração dos Orixás' (1985), and 'Axé' (1989). The band featured musicians including Jaime Sodré on electric guitar, Robertinho Barreto on bass, and Carlinhos Brown on percussion. They disbanded in the late 1990s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
