Os Sertões formed in the late 1990s in Ouricuri, Pernambuco, a remote city in Brazil's arid interior region known as the sertão. The band consisted of Zé Bezerra on vocals and rhythm guitar, Dinho Almeida on lead guitar, Beto Preta on bass, and Dema on drums. Their music drew from the traditions and experiences of the sertanejo people who live in that landscape.
They released their first album, Alma Sertaneja, in 2002, followed by A Pedra in 2005. The title track from that album, "A Pedra," became one of their most recognized songs, along with others like "Alamedas" and "Flor da Saudade." Their later albums included Terra e Sangue in 2008, Vozes do Sertão in 2012, and Raízes in 2018.
Os Sertões' music resonated with listeners who recognized its connection to the sertão's culture. They faced early challenges with limited resources and some skepticism about their authenticity, but continued performing and recording. Their work helped bring attention to sertanejo musical traditions beyond their home region.
