Os Taturanas

Os Taturanas were three brothers and a cousin from Fortaleza who started playing together in the early 1990s. Their music mixed Brazilian rhythms with funk and reggae, but what really connected with people was a song about a saint. In 1997 they released "São Expedito," a track that became a national hit in Brazil. It's a straightforward tribute to the Catholic saint of urgent causes, and its simple melody made it stick.

The song's popularity brought them attention, but also some criticism from people who felt they were using religion for commercial success. They kept writing about social issues anyway, which sometimes stirred things up with more conservative listeners. Their albums from that period include "A Festa do Bode" in 1997 and a self-titled record in 2003.

You still hear "São Expedito" around, especially from people who have a particular devotion to that saint. The band's name has become tied to that one song more than anything else they recorded.
