Os Thyrsa formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1960s around singer-songwriter Jorge Mautner. Their sound mixed samba and rock with experimental touches, though they never quite fit into a single category. The band included guitarist Lanny Gordin, bassist Andre Luiz, and drummer Claudio Bertrami alongside Mautner.
In 1967, they released "Caramba," a single that caught on quickly across Brazil. The song's rhythm and Mautner's lyrics connected with listeners during a politically tense period, though the band sometimes ran into trouble with government censors over their material. They kept working despite those pressures.
After "Caramba," Os Thyrsa put out albums like "Eu Não Sou da Sua Cama" in 1968, "O Samba de Jorge" in 1973, and a self-titled record in 1976. They disbanded in the late 1970s, but "Caramba" and another track, "Chegou A Hora," have stayed in circulation.
