Os Ultra-sônicos formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1967 as a trio with Gilberto Gil on guitar and vocals, Jorge Mautner on bass and vocals, and Milton Banana on drums. They released two albums in the late 1960s, their self-titled debut in 1968 and 'Domingo no Parque' the following year. Their sound pulled from psychedelic rock and Brazilian rhythms, with songs like 'Animal' and 'Garota com Problema' showing their experimental side.
After their two albums, the group didn't last long into the 1970s. Gilberto Gil went on to a much broader career in Brazilian music, while Mautner and Banana continued with their own projects. Those two records from the late sixties have held up as interesting artifacts of that moment when Brazilian musicians were figuring out how to make rock music their own.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
