Os Ventiladores formed in 1983 with Marcelo Nova on vocals, Luis Fernando Pinto on guitar, Ricardo Barreto on bass, and Ciro Pessoa on drums. Their debut album came out the following year. They were known for lyrics that mixed political commentary with social critique, which sometimes got them into trouble with authorities. Their song 'Encaixotando Você' became particularly well-known for its sharp take on Brazil's political establishment.
Musically, they worked with elements of punk and rock alongside Brazilian rhythms. Their live shows had a raw, energetic quality driven by Nova's distinctive vocal delivery. Other songs like 'Garoto De Programa' and 'Meu Pecado Predileto É a Luxúria' show the range of their lyrical concerns. They put out several albums through the late 1980s and into 1990, including 'Fantástico Mundo' in 1985 and 'Terra do Nunca' in 1990.
The band's lineup stayed mostly consistent, with Nova acting as the primary lyricist and creative force. They occasionally worked with other musicians like guitarist Edgard Scandurra. Their music, especially tracks like 'Encaixotando Você,' found an audience among listeners who responded to its directness and social edge.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
