Os Violeiros do Rei formed in São Paulo in the early 1960s around two viola players, Tião Carreiro and Pardinho. They played Sertanejo, the folk music of Brazil's interior, at a time when bossa nova and MPB dominated the scene. Their song 'Caipira Nato' came out in 1965 and became a kind of anthem for rural life.
They released albums like their self-titled debut in 1964 and 'Do Caiçara ao Catingueiro' in 1973. Their music got played on radio stations and in jukeboxes, and other artists covered their songs. The original lineup included Inezita Barroso on backing vocals.
After Tião Carreiro died in 1993, Pardinho kept the band going. Their music, including songs like 'Sonhador José,' stayed in circulation.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
