The Oslo Gospel Choir formed in 1988 under choirmaster Tore W. Aas, who wanted to build a multiracial group that could bridge cultural divides. Their sound draws from African-American gospel traditions, built around those soaring harmonies and rhythmic energy that give spiritual music its lift.
They put out their first album, 'Amazing Grace,' in 1990, which included their version of that hymn along with other spirituals like 'Nearer My God To Thee' and 'Oh Happy Day.' That record established their approach, and they followed it with albums like 'In His Hands' in 1993 and 'Celebrate' in 2000.
Over time the choir's lineup has shifted, with different vocalists coming through. Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø has performed with them on several occasions. In 2007, their appearance at an event hosted by Nigerian pastor T.B. Joshua drew some criticism due to controversies surrounding the pastor.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
