O'Sullivan Gilbert was the partnership between singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan and producer Gordon Mills, formed in London in 1969. Their debut album 'Himself' reached number one in the UK, anchored by the hit 'Alone Again, Naturally.' That song's particular blend of O'Sullivan's falsetto and Mills's arrangements gave them an early signature.
They released several albums through the 1970s and into the 1980s, including 'Back to Front' in 1972 and 'I'm a Writer, Not a Fighter' the following year. Their catalog includes songs like 'At The Very Mention Of Your Name' and 'Call On Me,' which continued in a similar vein of melodic, introspective pop. The duo's working relationship eventually became strained over business disputes.
While later records like 1989's 'Southpaw' didn't match their initial commercial peak, O'Sullivan kept writing. The songs from their early period, especially 'Alone Again, Naturally,' have had a long shelf life through covers and continued airplay.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
