Out in Style formed in Los Angeles around 2009, when Anya Marina and Sam Martin started working together. They were joined by bassist Jake Sinclair and drummer Ben Rogers. Their first album, 'Lucid Dream,' came out in 2012, with the title track getting attention on radio stations. They've put out a few more records since then, including 'Nocturne' in 2015, 'Aurora' in 2018, and 'Elysium' in 2021.
Their songs like 'Lucid Dream,' 'Ambrosia,' and 'Blue Citrus' have a dreamy, layered quality to them. Marina's voice floats over Martin's guitar work, with Sinclair and Rogers holding down a steady rhythm section. The music doesn't fit neatly into one category, but it tends toward the atmospheric and reflective.
In 2014, the band drew some criticism for being vocal about social and environmental issues in their music and public statements. They kept at it anyway, talking about things like climate change and mental health when they felt like it. Their catalog includes other tracks such as '(I'll Make It Right) This Time,' 'Another Bottle,' and 'Away From Vine Station.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
