Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Outfield formed in London in 1984 with Tony Lewis on vocals and guitar, John Spinks on bass, and Alan Jackman on drums. Their debut album 'Play Deep' came out the following year and did well on both sides of the Atlantic. The single 'Your Love' from that record became their calling card, a straightforward pop-rock track that got heavy radio play and stuck around in the cultural memory long after its chart run ended.

They put out a few more albums after that, including 'Bangin'' in 1989 and 'Voices of Babylon' in 1991, but nothing ever quite matched the reach of that first hit. The band's sound was built on clean guitar lines and Lewis's clear, high vocals, a style that fit neatly into the mid-80s rock radio format. They kept working for years, with a final studio album appearing in 2011.
