Overmaster came together in the UK during the mid-1980s, when heavy metal was having a moment. They took cues from bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, working up a sound that was loud but still had some melody to it.
Their first album, Spartan Warriors, came out in 1987. The title track got some attention, and they followed it with records like Metalmorphosis in 1989 and Force of Will in 1991. Steve Grimmett sang and Steve More played guitar through most of it, with other players coming and going over time.
Some people thought their lyrics about ancient history and mythology were too violent, but the band said they were just interested in how the past connects to now. They kept at it through the usual lineup shuffles and money problems that a lot of metal bands faced back then.
