Overstekend Wild formed in Amsterdam in 1979 with Henk Westbroek on vocals and guitar, Wouter Planteijdt on bass, and Erik Mesie on drums. Their name translates to 'Crossing Wildlife,' which fit their approach to music and performance.
Their 1981 song 'De Nieuwe Wereld' became something of an anthem for Dutch youth at the time, with Westbroek's lyrics cutting against the grain of what was expected. The band's sound had the energy of punk but didn't stay in one lane, pulling from garage rock and power pop as well.
They released several albums in the early 1980s, including their self-titled debut in 1980 and 'Geld Geld Geld' in 1982. The song 'Overstekend Wild' gave the band its name and became another track people remembered.
