Padrinho Zé Ricardo came together in Salvador, Brazil in the early 1980s. Their music drew from Afro-Brazilian traditions, particularly Candomblé rituals, which gave their work a distinct spiritual quality that wasn't always immediately accessible to broader audiences.
Their 1984 debut album 'Axé, Alegria e Paz' established their approach, mixing Brazilian rhythms with jazz, soul, and reggae elements. Two years later they released 'Benção da Casa,' which included the song of the same name that became something of an anthem in certain circles.
The group's core lineup included José Ricardo on vocals and guitar, Beto Jamaica on drums, Armandinho Macedo on guitar, and Carlinhos Brown on percussion. Later they added Jorge Zarath on saxophone, Peu Meurray on bass, and Bambu on vocals. They kept recording through at least 1993, when 'Canta Ícaro' came out.
