Pádua formed in the early 2000s in Vila Real, Portugal, when a group of friends came together around their interest in music. They began playing a version of fado that incorporated elements from jazz, rock, and folk, which drew some criticism from traditionalists who felt the genre should stay pure. The band kept at it anyway, releasing their first album, 'Espelho D'Água,' in 2006.
Their 2008 album featured the song 'Fado de Vila Boa,' which became something of an anthem for them. Other tracks like 'Portador da Luz' and 'Beijo salgado' are part of their catalog. They followed with albums in 2012 and 2017, and put out a live recording in 2020. The group includes Cristóvão Bastos on vocals and guitar, Pedro Gonçalves on Portuguese guitar, João Pedro Almeida on bass, and Diogo Almeida on drums.
