Archive material and source history
Paeja formed in Curitiba in 1988 with Almir Sater on lead vocals and guitar, Renato Teixeira Filho on vocals and guitar, Chico Teixeira on vocals and bass, and Guilherme Rondon on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1992 and included the song 'Meu Amigo Chico Bento,' which became a national hit in Brazil.
That song, an ode to the comic character created by Mauricio de Sousa, gave the band its initial recognition. They also recorded other tracks like 'Pássaros' and 'Azul.'
In 2002, a lawsuit was filed alleging that the melody for 'Meu Amigo Chico Bento' had been plagiarized. The legal case lasted for several years.
