Pagan Throne formed in Norway in 1993, with Kristian "Nagash" Espedal on vocals and guitar. Their first album, "Trident of Agony," came out in 1995 and stirred up some trouble with its dark themes, drawing protests and bans. They kept putting out records through the 1990s and 2000s, like "Celestial Deceit" in 1997 and "The Serpent's Embrace" in 2003.
"The Serpent's Embrace" had a track called "Ritual" that became a fan favorite. The band's sound shifted over time, taking on more progressive and doom metal elements alongside their black metal roots. Other songs like "Black Hordes" and "Countess of Night" show their range within that heavy, atmospheric style.
Nagash has been the constant, but the lineup changed around him, with drummers like Stig "HaaVard" Johansen and bassist Frode "Phrozen" Glesnes passing through. They released "Astral Necromancy" in 2021.
