Paint It Black formed in London in 2001 with Ian Astbury on vocals, Rich Leggett on guitar, Simon Jones on bass, and Martin Atkins on drums. Their debut single 'Car Song' introduced a raw, aggressive sound that caught attention quickly. The band's early work, including songs like 'Missionary Position,' often featured sexually explicit lyrics that sparked debate, with some critics condemning the content while others found it brutally honest.

Musically, they evolved across albums like 'Farewell, Dear Ghost' in 2004, which leaned into darker, atmospheric territory, and 'New York City' in 2006, which incorporated blues and psychedelic rock elements. Tracks such as 'New Folk Song' and 'Past Tense, Future Perfect' reflect this shifting approach, moving beyond their initial punk-inflected aggression.

Internal conflicts and personal challenges, including Astbury's struggles with drug addiction and mental health, led to a hiatus in 2009.
