Paixão Baiana formed in 1987 in Salvador, Bahia, with Nilton Pereira dos Santos on vocals. Their debut album that same year included "Bebendo e Chorando," which became their best-known track.
In 1991, the band performed an explicit version of "Bebendo e Chorando" at São Paulo Fashion Week, drawing criticism but also attracting a counterculture following. They released several albums through the 1990s, including "A Saga" in 1989 and "O Baile" in 1993.
Other members included guitarist Fabrício "Babu" Bahiense, drummer Marcelo "Marcelinho" Loureiro, and bassist Edson "Edinho" Santos. Their music drew from the samba and axé rhythms of Bahia.
