Paixão Côrtes formed in 1986 with accordionist Edson Rodrigues, vocalist Gerson Alves, and percussionist José Raimundo. They played forró, a style from Brazil's Northeast, and built their reputation performing in small towns and festivals.
Their 1992 song "Xote de Quatro Passi" became widely popular, helping establish the band. Other recordings include "Gaúcho Velho," "Chimarrita," and "Pezinho." Over time, the lineup expanded to include musicians like Antônio Marcos on bass and Zé Miguel on guitar.
Some listeners felt their approach to forró incorporated pop and sertanejo influences, which drew criticism from traditionalists. The band continued performing and recording albums like "Paixão em Movimento" in 1996 and "Coisa de Brasileiro" in 2003.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
