Pale Saints formed in Leeds in 1987 with Ian Masters, Meriel Barham, Graeme Naysmith, and Chris Cooper. Their first album, 'The Comforts of Madness,' came out in 1990, followed by 'In Ribbons' in 1992. That second record included 'Kinky Love,' a track that became one of their best-known songs.
Their sound had a drifting, atmospheric quality, with Barham's vocals floating over layered guitars. Other songs like 'Language of Flowers' and 'A Deep Sleep for Steven' carried that same hazy, melodic feel. The lineup shifted over time, with Cooper leaving in 1991 and Naysmith in 1994, bringing in other players like Miki Beavis and, briefly, Neil Halstead from Slowdive.
They stopped recording together in the late 1990s, but played some shows again in 2020. Their records still turn up in conversations about that early-90s stretch of UK indie and dream pop.
