Background notes

Archive material and source history

Pankrti formed in Ljubljana in 1977 with Peter Lovšin on vocals, Boris Kramberger on guitar, Gregor Tomc on bass, and Slavc Colnar on drums. Their debut album 'Dolgcajt' came out in 1980, and its title track captured a particular kind of restlessness that connected with people at the time.

They covered the Italian communist anthem 'Bandiera rossa,' which became one of their most recognizable songs. That kind of friction just seemed to sharpen their focus on songs that questioned things, like 'Anarhist' and 'Civili in vojaki.'

They put out a few more records in the early eighties, including 'Državni zločin' in 1981 and 'Pesmi o svobodi' in 1982. The sound on those albums shifted a bit, pulling in some post-punk and ska textures while keeping that direct, urgent feel.
