Pantelis Thalassinos was born in Athens in 1963. He started playing music early, drawing from rebetiko and Greek folk traditions. In the early 1980s he was part of the band Pyx Lax, and his first solo album came out in 1992.
His song 'Tyfles Elpides' came out in 1994. The lyrics spoke to a sense of lost hope during a difficult period, and it connected with many people in Greece. It became one of those songs that gets passed around and remembered.
Thalassinos kept writing and recording after that. He put out several more albums, and his music often dealt with straightforward, sometimes somber themes. He was known for a direct vocal style and simple arrangements that felt familiar.
