Paper Lace was a British pop band from Nottingham that formed in 1969. They're remembered mostly for one song, "The Night Chicago Died," which came out in 1973 and did well on charts in the UK and Germany. The original lineup had Philip Wright on vocals, Cliff Fish on drums, Mike Vaughan on bass, and Carlo Santanna on guitar.
That song about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 had a memorable chorus and Wright's vocals, but it also brought some trouble. There were accusations that it sounded too much like something by The Fortunes, and later the band got criticized for using a staged photo of a burning building on an album cover.
They put out a few albums like "Paper Lace" and "First Edition," and had other songs like "Billy Don't Be a Hero" and "Beautiful Sunday," but nothing else really matched that first hit. The lineup changed over time, with Wright staying on as the constant member while others came and went.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
