Archive material and source history
The Paperboys formed in Dublin during the mid-1990s, starting as street performers with an interest in traditional Irish folk and various global rhythms. The original group included brothers Michael and Jim Dunne along with their friend Paddy McKenna. They released their debut album 'Songs for a Foundling' in 1997.
That album contained 'Barcelona,' a song that became their most recognizable track. It's a bittersweet ode to the Spanish city that connected with listeners well beyond Ireland. Other songs from their catalog include 'Boatdrinks,' 'Change My Stars,' and 'Fly Away (The Great Escape).'
They went on to release several more albums, including 'The Paperboys' in 1998, 'Wide Open' in 2000, and 'The Things We Leave Behind' in 2003. Their lyrics sometimes addressed social and political topics, which occasionally drew criticism for being too direct.
