Background notes

Archive material and source history

Parálisis Permanente formed in Madrid in 1978 with Eduardo Benavente on vocals and guitar, Ana Curra on bass, and Nacho Canut on drums. Their sound pulled from punk's energy but had a darker, more introspective quality that felt distinctly Spanish. They released their debut album 'El Acto' in 1982, which included the track 'Adictos de La Lujuria' that became something of an anthem for disaffected youth at the time.

Benavente's writing was denounced as obscene by some, but the band leaned into their outsider status. They also recorded songs like 'Quiero Ser Santa' and 'Autosuficiencia' that continued in this vein.

Benavente struggled with drug addiction during the band's brief run. He died of an overdose in July 1983 while on tour in Madrid, effectively ending Parálisis Permanente. Their music has maintained a cult following in the years since, particularly among Spanish post-punk listeners.
