PARALYSIS

Paralysis formed in Bristol in the late 1990s, with Mark Rutherford and James Acaster starting out playing electronic music in clubs and warehouse parties. Their track 'Tardis' came out in 2002, built around a pulsing bassline and layers of dissonant sounds that gave it a drifting, hypnotic feel. The song took its name from the Doctor Who time machine, but it worked more as an atmospheric piece than a direct reference.

Their music has drawn from dub, ambient, and industrial textures over time, though they've generally kept things on the abstract side. Songs like 'Altered States' and 'Enemies Within' share that tendency toward layered, slightly haunted electronic arrangements. They've had listeners who appreciate that approach and others who find it too scattered, which has been part of their reception from the beginning.
