Violeta Parra was born in 1917 and taught herself guitar, writing songs that drew from Chilean traditions. In the 1950s she spent time in Europe, where the bohemian circles she encountered seemed to sharpen her artistic approach.
Her songs often dealt plainly with love, loss, and social observation. 'Gracias a La Vida' and 'Volver a Los Diecisiete' became particularly well-known, their direct language connecting with listeners across generations. She recorded albums like 'Las Últimas Composiciones' in 1966 and 'Los Cantos de Violeta Parra' in 1955.
Parra performed both solo and with accompanists like guitarist Gilbert Favre. She died in 1967. Her work, including songs like 'La Jardinera' and 'Me Gustan Los Estudiantes,' remains a reference point in Latin American folk music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
