Pastor Adonias P. Soares grew up in Chã Grande, Pernambuco, where his father played accordion. He started writing songs as a teenager, drawing from Brazilian musicians like Jackson do Pandeiro and Luiz Gonzaga.
In 1986, he formed the band Filho with accordionist Gerson Silva and percussionist Eliezer Silva. Their song "Filho" became a gospel hit in Brazil, mixing traditional rhythms with religious lyrics. Some in the evangelical community questioned whether his music leaned too much toward secular styles, but he kept recording through the late 1980s and early 1990s.
