A justiça prometida por Deus
para a justificação dos eleitos
entre os pecadores,
e que passou
a se manifestar
na dispensação da graça,
à qual Paulo chama
de tempo presente,
com a vinda de nosso
Senhor Jesus Cristo
a este mundo
para morrer na cruz,
foi profetizada
nas Escrituras
do Velho Testamento,
porque Paulo diz
que ela foi testemunhada
pela Lei e pelos profetas,
modo comum de se designar
as Escrituras no passado.
Esta justiça de Deus prometida
seria manifestada sem lei,
conforme dizer do apóstolo,
isto é, ela não consistiria
num novo conjunto de leis
para serem observadas
pelo povo da nova aliança,
conforme havia se dado
com Israel
desde os dias de Moisés,
mas num ato de justiça
que seria cumprido
por Cristo morrendo
no lugar do pecador,
carregando sobre Si
todos os pecados deles,
para que pudessem
ser perdoados
e justificados por Deus.
E isto seria feito também
por um ato de pura graça
para qualquer um que creia,
sem qualquer distinção pessoal.
Deus deliberou que seria,
na dispensação da graça,
misericordioso
para com as nossas transgressões
e não lembraria
dos nossos pecados,
porque poderia
nos perdoar completamente
uma vez que
castigaria
o Seu próprio filho unigênito
no lugar daqueles
que viriam a crer nele.
Estes que crêem,
e somente eles,
podem receber
o dom precioso
da justiça divina,
porque não serão
apenas perdoados,
mas completamente
santificados.
