Patrick Gilmore was born in Dublin in 1829 and came to the United States in 1849, eventually settling in Boston. He worked as a bandmaster there before the Civil War began.
When the war started, he volunteered to lead the 24th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Band, which became known simply as Gilmore's Band. In 1863, while with the Union Army, he wrote "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again." The song became widely familiar during the war.
After the war, Gilmore kept his band together and toured the U.S. and Europe. He also organized the National Peace Jubilee in Boston, a large musical festival meant to help with post-war reconciliation.
