Editor's note

Paul Di'Anno, Iron Maiden's first voice

The raw-throated singer who launched the band's early sound on 'Iron Maiden' and 'Killers'.

For the early Maiden sound, listen to 'Murders in the Rue Morgue.' For his solo work, 'Broken Down Angel' gives you a sense of what came after.

Di'Anno's voice gave Iron Maiden its initial bite, that rough, urgent snarl you hear on 'Running Free' and 'Wrathchild.' He was there for the first two albums, the ones that built the foundation before Bruce Dickinson took over. Even now, when he plays live, you'll still hear 'Charlotte The Harlot' in the set, a direct line back to 1980.

He joined Iron Maiden in 1977 and sang on their 1980 debut and 1981's 'Killers.' After leaving in 1981, he put out solo albums like 'Di'Anno' in 1984 and 'The Beast' in 1990, with songs like 'Broken Down Angel' and 'Do Or Die.' These days he tours with a band that includes guitarist Dave 'Bucket' Colwell.

Archive material and source history

Paul Di'Anno was the first vocalist for Iron Maiden, joining the band in 1977. He sang on their first two albums, the self-titled debut in 1980 and 1981's 'Killers,' which included songs like 'Running Free' and 'Wrathchild.' His voice had a raw, aggressive quality that fit the band's early sound.

After leaving Iron Maiden in 1981, Di'Anno worked on his own material. He put out solo albums like 'Di'Anno' in 1984 and 'The Beast' in 1990, with tracks such as 'Broken Down Angel' and 'Do Or Die' appearing in his later catalog. These records didn't reach the same level of attention as his work with Maiden, but they kept him active in the metal scene.

In recent years, he's performed with a band that includes guitarist Dave 'Bucket' Colwell and drummer Brian 'Thunderstick' Thomas. Songs like 'Charlotte The Harlot' and 'Innocent Exile' still turn up in his sets, connecting back to those early years.
